Between 70-72 there was some overlap in the use of the 400 engine size designation, it could mean BB or SB depending upon the car. This definately is the 402 LS-3 version which was rated at 300hp in 71 and down to 240 in 72. After that, well you know the rest of the story...

Nice car! wilma

Just to add my 2 cents...this same engine in a Chevy truck was listed as an 8/400 on the side engine id's...I know because that's where the engine in my former Nova came from...it's actually a 402.

And the trucks with the 402 also had a emblem on the front fenders that said 400 not 402.Although in reality it was a 402 C.I. Big Block and not 400 C.I. was this having to do with Getting insurance on the cars back then or something.I know I have heard stories to that effect but nothing ever in writing from GM.I know that is why they cut the HP ratings back on the models that are being talked about was due to insurance at least I remember reading that in some form before.

So is it really a 402 big block even though they advertise it as a 400? I've never heard of a 400 big block, just the 396, 402, 427, 454.

Admit it. GM hiccupped on the use of
the 400. They said, lets .030 the 396 & match B.O.P.
then they made the S.B.400 & "oh no" change the B.B.
to a 402 for less confusion.

seems like if I recall the early 70's Impalas mounted the 400 emblems in one place if it were a small and in a different area if it was the 402.

Pantera: I've *never* seen a 402 emblem on the side of a '67-'72 truck, should be "400" if it's big block, or "350" if it's small block. Grab a picture of it if ya can...

Rick, I don't recall the 70 and up full size cars being available with the big block 400/402. I believe you either got the small block 400 or the 454.

I'll go one step further and say that I've never seen an OEM 402 emblem on the exterior of any Chevrolet vehicle - car or truck.
