Not meaning to ruin anyone's deal here, but I believe the ones with the snap ring on top are Cal Customs. They also have a shinny base with a fitting. Looking closely at ones on original cars, I believe those used by Motion were Stelling & Hellings. They had a chrome removable band with tabs at the ends for a small screw and nut to hold the band tight. The base was also a dull "spun" finish, with no adaptor tube.

I bought one over the counter from Joel in '69 for the 396 I had in my '62, and that's the one he sold me. Just my experience.

Verne,
I did see some Stellings & Hellings, some Mr.Gaskets with a flat snap ring, some Cal Customs with a snap ring with pry loops( I still have the original on the car, no smog tube adapter) dome air cleaners(the earlier ones were used without the smog tube adapter, but were used later as the EPA laws were being enforced. One thing the early dome air cleaners do have in common is a top screen with round holes and no smog tube adapter. Other style air cleaners wre used ,but the standard PhaseIII package offered the dome air cleaner, which the customer could modify.

Joe,
I'm glad you offered your memories on those. I really liked the looks of that air cleaner on my car. And since I also had a set of Hookers and a few other odds and ends on the car from Motion, of course, I had to have the M/P decal on the 1/4 window. That was the thing to do in '69. (or 2004). The best things never change.

the style you are refering to was made by Mr. Gasket and was their early first design version. It was availabe from '66- to around '69. Mr. Gasket then discarded the large band and went to the flat snap ring arrangement. Cal Custom used the wire shaped ring.
I don't think Motion ever used Stellings & Hellings. S&H was more of a west coast distributor. Motion was a distributor for Mr. Gasket and Cal Custom so why use a third manufacturer?.

Mosport,
I can't tell for sure from the photo, but that one appears to have a snap ring around the edge. Maybe it's just reflections of something else. Mine had no snap ring. The outter band was split with two metal 90deg tabs tack welded at the ends. The tabs had a hole in them for a #10 (I think) round head slotted machine screw and nut to tighten the band together. The base was merely a dish with a very slight vertical edge, just enough to capture the bottom domed screen. Then the element layed in there with the top dome screen on top. You had to squeeze it together as you fitted the chrome band around the pieces, then held it together while fiddling with the screw and nut. It wasn't exactly user friendly but it sure was cool looking and of high quality. I always thought of Cal Custom stuff as a little lower quality, mainly their plated stuff, although some of their pieces were done well...(like the valve covers). Just my opinion.
I have a couple very old photos of mine on the car back in '69, but I no longer have the piece itself.
Verne
I sent JoeG an old photo that shows the piece lying on the ground next to the car, but if he posts it, I'll have to kill him..............
