Thanks for posting those pictures! What a great site for information. Does anyone have a picture with the black all the way up to the trunk seal?

I have personally never seen this and have made 69 Chevelles the focus of my hobby for 30 + years. If GM ran the black up to the trunk seals, I'd like to know that as well and from which factory. |

The main reason for asking is that when I first bought my Chevelle it still had the original paint and the black on the tail panel was painted all the way up to the trunk lip like a Camaro. I had never seen this before and thought someone had repainted this area. When I took it to the painter I told him to paint that area like the pictures shown here. Years later I saw a couple of 69 Chevelles with the tail panel painted like mine had been and one owner told me that was correct for KC Leeds plant cars. Mine was built in July at the Leeds plant. There was also a short discussion with NCOA members about this years ago but nothing came of it. I've always wondered if I made a mistake on how my Chevelle was painted and was hoping someone here could provide an answer.

I've owned this Chevelle for 33 years now and it's part of the family.

Has anyone else seen the black tail panel painted up to the trunk seal on a KC built '69 Chevelle?

I've got 2 KC '69s here. Both were painted between the moldings not above the upper moldings. Both had the black paint extended on the quarter extensions also, supporting the belief that the quarter extensions were painted on the car but temporarily extended maybe 1/2" to get the paint in all areas and not bridge between the two.
I've personally stripped both cars of their original paint. I've also had quite a few SS parts cars that were only painted between the moldings. Some were Fremont cars, a couple more KC cars. Not saying it couldn't have happened, but my take on assembly line anomalies...I'd go with the mainstream unless I had iron clad documentation. It'd still be a tough call, knowing I'd constantly have to defend the decision. |

Thanks for the info on your Chevelles. I guess it will be one of those mysteries that won't have a definite answer. I've learned that things happened at different plants over the years that didn't always agree with the assembly manual.
