Actually the originals are just stamped galvanized steel, you can see the crystal patterns in many low mile examples.

Hi Mark,
Do you have any pics of any from your low mile survivors? I'd like to see that as all I ever see are like what Mike says and bare steel. All the NOS ones I have are also bare steel. The definition of the dimple varies quite a bit on the originals. Some I have are very pronounced and crisp and some of them are not.

Love to see some pics...I've had to bow out on restoring mine. I finally got a good contour and a decent nipple and burned thru a edge during the final polish. Time to practice on the repro when they arrive. My plan is to remove the zinc, polish the steel and age them to about a 30k mi look. Thinking slow heat and a oil bath, clean old steel. Guess I may need to stretch them a bit too if the fit too loose. I think I have a die for that...Thanks for everyones input, I'll post up some pics after they arrive.

I sent some pictures to Chris of near NOS factory dust shields from a '69Z with the AI paper sticker. I can post some pics of a low mile '70 Trans Am with the plated shields, the small crystals are visible. On most of the original low mile cars the dust shields are never really seem to be rusted, maybe a bit darker grey in color compared to the surface rust colored suspension components.

Mark I think that we're talking about different parts here. You sent me pictures of some disc brake backing plates.
If I understood Steve ' request properly I was thinking he was looking for info regarding the wheel bearing dust caps that press into the front of the brake rotors which are part # 3775190.

Every one I had (none were really usable for a restored car) were bare steel. I do not recall ever having one in galvanized metal.

mikeeee - i have had about 6 nos ones and they are all bare steel.... and i got a fresh gallon of homemade vino last weekend from san diego :-)

for sure the backing plates for the front discs were galvanized - we saw that on my 1600 mile Z.....

anyhow.....hey big - - paint them white like we did in the old days!!
