Chuck 427king had a 68 l79 red chevelle for sale last year but it was a coupe with a vinyl roof. I know that doesn't answer your question about how many vents but maybe he can answer some questions.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't the VIN tell the story? I thought all SS cars had a 138 VIN...and the SS convertible was 13867 ?

The L79 cars were not an SS car, many were plain jane hardtop cars like the 300 model, but also came with the Malibu trim. The SS convertibles did have the 13867 code but the SS cars in 68 were only available with a Big Block.
The L79 cars with the Malibu trim had the 13667 code, like this one has.
This is the info from the cowl tag.

Just a tad of retro here. I had a 68 SS Chevelle when I was a kid...I sure don't remember the tack being that way..Just sayin.

Technically you can. The L78 only came in SS body styles so the convertible would have a 138 vin. The L79 was not offered in any SS trim whatsoever so the vin on an L79 vert will start with 136.

Frankk, The roll tach is the factory tach in 1968. This is the correct tach/gauge package and as far as i know the only tach option you could get in a 68 Chevelle..

Absolutely correct.

Being that the L79 was a hydraulic lifter motor, would it have had a 6K redline on the factory tach?

Bill, there is very limited information on these cars, From what i have found on the internet, the L78 and the L79 engines both had the 6000 redline. But i cannot verify that. The only things i have to go by is a 3/8 fuel line, the tach, it is a 4 speed like all L79 cars.It also has the correct 4 piston disc brakes which is an option on all 68`s. The only other item i see is it has the extra brace on the upper rear control arms like on the cars with the F41 suspension. Thanks

My 138 '68 SS396 had the rolling tach as well. I thought that was just the coolest thing, even though it was impossible to see.
