I called the engine machine shop after work for an update.

The original cylinder heads are scrap (as I already knew but wanted a second opinion)

The extra engine heads checked out good with MPI.

The extra block checked good with MPI.

The extra crank is scrap, I have to see it (so I will drop off my warranty W31 short block to hopefully donate the crank)

I will stop by this week to take scrap home and drop off, and to take pictures:-)

I am curious to see the bores measured to see if we can stay at 0.030" with honing only? This will save the cost of boring which will allow for a few unseen costs.

Ryan

Did they say why the parts were scrap.....specifically the heads?

I am going after work tomorrow to inspect, and discuss.

A few of the combustion chambers are rusted badly, really deep pitting, a few ports are rusted bad, a few valves are broken off, a few studs are broken off..... Very bad set of heads, I may media blast them to make good wall art.

Ryan

PS: I got my warranty W31 from the engine stand to my car by myself:-) also packed up the flywheel for machining/balancing.

very bad, thats giving them to much credit. Try evaporust instead of media blasting.

if you plan to race, might I suggest a centerforce flywheel. Your right foot will thank you.

I will look into the flywheel, do you know of a specific model?

What is wrong with the "scrap" crank did not take a long time to understand:-( Wiped right out.

Al and his daughter had bought this engine used, and installed it in an attempt to resurrect the car, it probably would have ran for a while but the bearings would have soon spun and seized the rotating assy.

I hope the crank is good from the warranty short block.....

I only had a few minutes to drop off items and check out the crank and vacate the dance floor.

I did look on Summit for better quality flywheels....... I didn't have this in the budget........... more research required, possibly source a used piece and have it reworked and balanced?

Ryan

I'm running a stock 3/8" connecting rods, cast iron crank and flywheel, shifting at 7000 rpm. I will go out on a limb and say you probably won't abuse your car as hard as I do.

In other words.......if the motor is built/balanced correctly, you really shouldn't have an issue......but never say never as the old saying goes.

Thanks Kurt, I agree, it will take years to get as brave as you.

Dan:-( Take off eh!!!

My pistons will be forged, rods are forged, crank is Nodular cast iron,

I have a line on a used steel SFI flywheel, clutch fork, and slip yoke....... I hope this works out:-)

Ryan

What does MAW stand for............. Might As Well? well Nick Morocco and I are MAW/mulling over the idea of building an M22Z(3)

The more we research the more it looks like the right way to go.

2.99 first gear, 2.04 second gear, 1.46 third gear, 1 to 1 fourth, with 3.42 rear gears that makes for a perfect 10.2 to 1 final first gear ratio(textbook) with almost a perfectly even drop of 28% to 30% between gears....

Also 55 mph at 2300 rpm, and 75 mph at 3200 rpm.
