That article generated a boatload of "Letters to the Editor" of that magazine for many months.

It still is generating a lot of hatred on a Mopar board. :-)

I am just young enough to have missed that article, but I do recall when the magazines were writing about Grand Nationals being faster than the Corvette and GM shutting them down. Buick has some history of serving up humble pie!

I remember it well. I worked on and drove a 71 GS 455 stage 1 car and they are really quick. It is hard for the Mopar folks to believe there beloved Hemi got beat. But believe it. There are cars and engines that are a lot of hype. I have a first gen Z28 and know they are "remembered" to be greater than they really are. Numbers separate fact from fiction. That also sparked the 50 fastest list and the ringers. That helped push our car hobby/ addiction and helped legitimize it.

I remember that article like it was yesterday too. It caused quite a stir before the internet. Imaging what a bruhaw it would cause today??!!

What kind of rear gears were those cars running?...the Buick looked like it was flying down the quarter. Now I know why my grandfather always had a big Buick Wildcat wilma

I would be curious too Tom. I've never known Buicks to run 4 series gears. For Buick a 3:55 was like a 4.56 to a Chevy. Most had 3.0X gears and ran hard with all that torque.
