any thoughts on the value of a 1974 L82 long-block? over $500?

What's it out of specifically? Corvette? Camaro? Auto or 4 Speed? Honestly I think around $400 give or take a few bucks is spot on. Trying to find the right buyer would be the hard part.

just pulled it out of a black '71 RS Z28 we got out of New York 10 years ago.

If the components are original it should be a 4 bolt #010 block, heads will be #881 castings with 2.02/1.60 valves[74cc chambers] and it will have a steel crank and forged rods. Seems like a good platform to build from provided there are no issues with the individual pieces. There are probably lots of small blocks floating around...but if it is all together in one place that helps. $500 would be a great price...I'm sure you could get more...especially if it has all the tin and bolt on stuff.
