I also tried the magic eraser and it shredded. They now sell heavy duty ones but I haven't tried them yet. WD40 makes sense.

Ive had very good results with Mother's "Back to Black"

Applied it to a set of OE (not repo) SC200s in the Fall of '06, and as of a couple of months ago they were still black.
