The black RS/Z had the same number on the top of the heater box and the top of the gas tank... the number 80...

I still think those #'s were a sequence #, especially when you find them in multiple locations.
 I have also seen a # on the lower front fender extension's on Camaros. Just a thought. Mike

Here's the fender extension from my 69 Z11 zone office show car. 02D car with 6104XX VIN. I've always wondered what it meant.
