Default Re: 67 Impala SS396 3 speed on the column?

VERY, VERY rare indeed. I have only ever seen one for sale and one in a car. At one time I had the blank top plate and have no idea where it went. I also had a flat console end plate vs the triangular one used when I believe you ordered the 8-track or Multiplex unit. Maybe during the move it will show up.....

I always wondered if it would be possible to order a console without ordering a floor shift. Was this exclusive to the 66 Caprice/Impala 3 speed stick, or could it be had with an automatic column shift too? Were gauges mandatory, or would it have also been possible to order a console with absolutely nothing on it but 2 blank plates? (that would be even weirder looking!) Any other Chevy's offered this way, or was it a 1966 only thing? Pretty sure the 69 Camaro ordering info specifically states that a console is only available with a floor shift, but I'm just going by memory on that... I do know a 3 speed manual column shift was standard.

The old bachelor that lives up the street has a 65 SS 3 on the tree, with the short console, and buckets. He bought it new. Story goes he didn't want to spend the extra 15 bucks to put it on the floor. He just got a hot water heater about 10 years ago. Inside of the house looks like 1950.

I used to own a '69 Impala Super Sport 427/390 with 3 on the tree, bucket seats, and a factory shifter delete plate in the console......still have a copy of the build sheet.

It was brown, and my wife nicknamed it "the log".

66 and 67 Fairlane XL's all came with consoles but a three speed stick was column shifted. They had a blank console too. The Fairlane GT console was an option and they made some of them three on the tree with a 390.

That's what makes 60's cars great. You can get things like 4 speed wagons and manual steering on full size cars.

Same with the 1966 Charger.

However, while it does seem unusual, 3-on-the-tree was pretty much standard fare for most cars in the 1960s, so we shouldn't be surprised some cars exist like this.
