My free advice (you know what that's worth....), would be to be yourself and as honest and casual as possible. The investigative reporter approach could (would)make them uneasy. I try to just follow their lead gently guinding them to the info I want if they don't go there. I try to contain my excitement while still letting them know that the info they are giving me is great and important. Good luck.
