Never have I seen a blacked out cowl area on a car that did NOT have stripes. Ive seen plenty of white in that area on a white striped Z/28, without any attempt to blacked out. The wiper transmission is installed after paint...BKH

I believe JohnZ has said that the area was "supposed" to be blacked out, but it was pretty random as to how often it was actually done that way. This, and a orig paint PC that was orange here, are the only orig paint cars that Ive dealt with that was not body color in the cowl area (orig paint, black stripe Z):

If the car had Z stripes that's normal,so there isnt another color showing through the grilles of the cowl panel in the middle of the stripes, which is also why you found orange in this area on a pace car...but without stripes I've never seen one that wasn't body color.

The original cars I have looked at have been body color, with the exception of Z's being stripe color. My 69 SS survivor is body color.

I realized that error shortly after typing it but it was too late to delete. Van Nuys masked the cowl before painting the firewall, Norwood didn't.
