We bought our first Chevelle new in '69. It wasn't long before the shifter started giving problems and finally broke. In went a Hurst Competition Plus unit. For the sake of breathing, and looks Hedman Headers were added a little later. When the 60 series Uniroyals first came out, they were only in 15 inch sizes so I bought some chromed aftermarket 15 inch rally wheels and added the bigger tires when the originals wore down. When the car goes back together I'm going to use the old rallys and the Hurst shifter again. Would that be day three or what? I even have one of the old original white Hurst "T" handle as well.
Our 396 car has the Hurst shifter, along with the Stewart-Warner tach and gauges that were installed by the original owner. Kind of neat stuff even if they aren't very accurate any more.
Sam is also right. With the leaned out carb (68 primary jets) and terrible timing curve the car really wasn't set up to perform. Emissions were being addressed to some extent. The shifter was balky and the exhaust system wasn't particularly effective. These cars really did need some help.

Day-2 was not all about performance. It was also about looks and keeping pace with your buddy who thought he a had fast Ford or Mopar. It was about change, the in thing to do. Loud mufflers, and rebellion! Tires sticking out because they looked neat. It was the sixties...flower power, ban the bra, protest the war! Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young! It wasn't just thinking you were going to make your car a bad a$$ ride but to impress the girls too. It is hard for younger guys to understand why we just didn't flog the stuff the car came with. We were told through the aftermarket to junk all that stuff, your car would never run with the original parts. Get into the groove. Like groovey man!!! Actually some guys cars slowed up. They over cammed them and over carbed them. Tires were too big and the gear ratios to high. Headers and header mufflers leaned an already lean motor even more. On and on and on! But one thing is for sure I would NEVER trade those times and memories for anything except maybe my 2 grandaughters. The sixties started and ended that gretest era on earth. So let that be a to ya, you youngsters! Tell em Schonye!!!

Better still, take the grandchildren and their friends for a ride. Took a friend for a first time ride this afternoon in our 455 powered Lemans. He's still smiling.

How about a 73 AMC Gremlim "X" 304CI. purple with white stripe dusting off a 69 z-28 302,4-speed black with gold stripes. As the story goes my brother and I were taking a buddy home from school when the Z-28 was in front of us going out of town. When we got out of town we saw a downshift from the Z so my bro says lets play.Needless to say we went past the Z in 2nd gear at 90mph,at which time the Z let off. What great times those were.

If most of us big 3 guys will admit...we got beat by a few AMC's in our life too. How about the 69 AMX with the factory dual quads and tin valve covers? Bad car! Hard to beat.
