disk brakes were too new back then and not everybody had a good experience with them. I bet his buddy had problems with a set on another car so when he ordered his he opted for the power Drum brakes.
Remember back then "New" technogly was not as desirable as it is today.

last 2 cents a lot of the guys in the know back then went with drums for less drag if they were going to run the car at the track.
