I was trying to find out about the correct coil my '68.
From what I have been able to tell the 270 coil is for cowl induction '69 z's while the non cowl cars recieved the 298 coil. The 298 coil is what came with '68 z's also, I have been told that some '68's came with a 293 coil maybe due to part shortages? The z28 as well as all special high performance engine coils came with the ability to discharge & recover at a faster rate than a standard coil. I believe they call these high speed coils. The 293 coil came with all standard small & big block V8 engines. I'd love to hear other opinions about this

Thanks for the info Rob, that makes sense. Now why is a 298 different from a 270 if the engine is the same other than one has cowl induction and the other does not?

The coil assy # differs for a duct hood sb because of the bracket; it is the same bracket used with the 275/327. The coil is the same. It positions the coil approximately -5∫ vertical compared to the the standard bracket to clear the larger air cleaner assembly.
BBs don't require a different bracket.

If you can find a Sun tune up chart it lists the coil number.

Joe, They list #293 on the Sun Chart. 1969 got #298 coils, but I have seen unmolested cars with 293's. This is just one of many things that can't be explained. Sam

Never seen a 424 coil. Saw 298's and a lot of common 293's. Learn something new everyday. Sam
