Ours were silver. I think it was just some sort of silver paint.

Keith I know that this is off topic, but didn't you say that there was originally no 427 or horsepower rating decals on your air cleaner? How about the other two guys you knew that bought COPO Chevelles back then?

The emblem that I put on the breather lid was one from 1966 or 1967. The red wire and ballast resistors, on the firewall, were part of a points triggered Delco CD ignition kit that I also had installed. Still have the CD kit in the original box. None of the three cars had breather decals. I think the Tonawanda decal was the only one under the hood. Mine didn't have a posi decal in the trunk either.

------Hope I dont start an arguement, but I looked over a COPO Chevelle just after it rolled off the transport truck in 1969,and it seems to me it had only the 427 decal on the air-cleaner lid and "T" sticker on the valvecover.Oh,also smog sticker, but I couldnt have cared less about it back in 69!.........Bill S

Bill I bet this was possiable. Could this have varied by assembly plant or model such as if it were a Camaro or Chevelle?

Since Flint and Tonawanda supplied engines for all plants I doubt it varied by final assembly plant. The only factory documentation I know of is the ZL1 engine assembly manual. It calls for a number of small items to be painted with black engine enamel, among them the engine lift hooks. Road test photos of the #3 ZL1 show a black front hook. But the hook in the L88 photo elsewhere on site doesn't look painted at all.
