Why there were silver RS grilles in cars with colors other than black is because they were added to the cars...
Why you saw a black SS with a black grille - it was added later after the original became damaged or perhaps a factory screw up, if it was installed at the factory there would need to be CRAZY documentation that the grille was not installed after the fact. IIRC the silver RS grilles were not available through service for very long - maybe to 1973?
