They do become very brittle over time. I put them in almost boiling water for a minute or two to help the plastic get a little more pliable. Then insert thin/small flat screwdrivers to open up the sides a little (this is the "Be VERY Careful part"), one to each side and leave them in, then a larger pry at tongue opening to slowly lever cover off.

X2 what Kevin stated. I liked using feeler gages to release the tabs. Once you do a few it is easy. If you have one thats damaged, practice on it.
Maybe someone has a photo of a loose cover that shows the 2 locking tabs.
