I believe under certain conditions there was an air flow restriction with the original flat-bottom. Elevating the lid would eliminate the problem.

I have had several flat bottoms and the element sealed to the base just fine.

Restore it. Base looks really solid. You already have a line on a snorkle. You have the most important part and having the tube is a big big plus.

Appreciate the feedback guys. The base is in excellent shape save the obvious snorkel hack job.
