I wouldn't count your engine out. I have a 03C 70 L78 with a Sept 69 cast date.

Yep,I've seen a few of those too.
When they abruptly cancelled putting that L-78 engine into the early 1970 Chevelles,(due to the the LS-6 debuting),they probably banked a fair amount of those early 854 4-bolt main blocks,so turned to the new Camaro,(and Nova), to eat up the remaining.
