At a dealership here in KC, somebody traded in a beautiful 87 5.0 Mustang LX convertible with 32,000 original miles. This program is literally making me sick.

I'm not quite ready to wave the BS flag yet, but I am having a hard time believing that people are trading in cars that are obviously worth considerably more than $4500.

Now this is killing me. At a local Ford dealership, a 97 Camaro SS, and 99 Firebird Formula were traded in as clunkers.
Do they get the $4500 on top of the trade in value toward a new vehicle, or is it just the $4500? |

I believe they only get $4500. Since the car can't be resold and the engine will be turned into a useless metal block, that's all the (misinformed) owner gets.

I think you are entitles to $3500/$4500 plus the dealers best estimate of the scrap value of the car -$50 administative fee.
It has me wondering, if you could get the $3500/$4500 and then not accept the scap value and get the car back after the engine has been killed? http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=23832913 Here is an example of an Audi which has a very high value in the sum of it's parts. Has anyone heard of such a thing? |

[/ QUOTE ]But these people are just going by "trade-in value." The problem is that the average person is not near as knowledgeable on vehicle values and the dealership tells them the vehicle's worth next to nothing so they figure $4500 is way better. Remember there are a LOT of dumb, or should I say uneducated people out there.

Nope. Dumb is the correct word.
There's no direct correlation between education and intelligence.

In a way this reminds me of the early `80's when we used to see SS396 Chevelles and Z28 Camaros on the local short track and demolition derby circuits on a weekly basis.
As it was then, many today simply don't have any knowledge nor appreciation of America's automotive heritage. |
