Default restoring aluminum valve covers w/ chrome?

I want to restore a pair of original Motion Performance sbc Valve covers. They're in good-fair shape with the regular discoloring, blemishes and pitting. One small chip about 1/4 inch on one of the fins.

I really like the looks of Caleb Arone's M/T valve covers on his '69 COPO Camaro. If I remember correctly, Brian H. said he chromed the covers and they came out surprisingly well.

Is chrome a good application for a driver car? Is it durable when subjected to rapid heating and then cooling?
What other techniques work well too?

Any good chrome shops around?

Thanks guys!
-Dan
