Bob,

Personally, I think it would be great if this car was restored. I don't think I'm alone in that thought process.

However, I think the concern is that the trim tag & VIN
will end up on a re-body and Viola - another clean L/78 found !

I also believe that there is some truth there Bob, at least about saving the car. How much metal work is too much? Who sets the standard? This is still America, and I say that if someone has the cojones to tackle this project, more power to em! How many CoPo's/Yenkos/Supercars were tubbed race cars, and are now "restored"?

As far as the crate body goes, I am a little less sure and am still "thinking" about my opinion on that one.......

MY POINT EXACTLY !!!

I love surviver cars 100% .....but theres something to be said about bringing a car back from the dead. And OH BOY.....is this one dead !!!

And about the re-pop body......I too am up in the air on this one. But i guess this L-78 car is the reason they make the new body's.

Uh...except there is no "car" to restore.
Heck. I'd like that car re-bodied or not, but If a complete original car is 100k, then I wouldn't be paying 100k for the re-body.
And when I see someone chunk down 10k for a couple of tags and 4 bucks worth of scrap, I see an opportunist, and I'd be willing to bet the possibility this car's crash history ends with him.

I'm glad someone will bring it back to life, All I'm saying is that people need to know what they are buying down the road.

This is where the New Repo Shell comes into play. All the partial VINs are right there so they get welded into the new shell.

These new bodies are painfully easy to identify. Uneducated buyers will be the victims. Sites like this, and the hobbyists and professionals that live here, are the best defense these people have.

We fix some very bad stuff. This one is really beyond that due not only to the rust, but collision damage. Also were this a ZL1, Yenko, or high end piece, there might be room for a break even senerio. The cost to resurrect this is way higher than the value done.
The only way to do cars in this shape, in order to verify that it's the real deal is to take pictures at all phases of the work. And if you need to change a tag, have a member of law enforcement witness it. In Ia if the title has been surrendered to the state, it can never be retitled again. It's officially junked period. Good luck to the new owner.

Thanks for adding the "professional's" point of view.

I think this puts into words what many of us have been
trying to articulate.

Just when you think you have seen it all. Something like this surfaces. I would love to see the pictures of the restoration. This reminds me of a guy a few years back driving up to Nova Scotia Canada from New York to have a 67 "R" series ford dug up by a backhoe in a friends field to recover the tags and vin. The car rolled over and over in about 71. There was nothing left when flattened by the dozer and used as fill with some other vehicles. At least he only paid for some extra fill and sod in the end.

I personally know where A 68 BB Camaro is sitting right now that was wrecked badly many many years ago and parked behind A mech shop in TN. The owner has every piece of paperwork on the car but thieves stole the VIN and Cowl tag and A few other things that were on the car.The engine was gone when I saw it but I cannot remember if he said he pulled it or the thieves took it also. I am sure these have been installed on another Camaro somewhere. The only thing they forgot was to cut the hidden vins off the firewall, they are still attached.

Well, he needs to re-report that old car to the police. They can run a 50-state DMV check on it. The result: If the car was re-registered, the car gets seized and he gets a restored car back (but then he'd have to remove the VINs and replace them on his old wrecked car.
