Default 1968 Chevelle ss Day 2 - L88 427

Real Day 2 L88 427 1968 Chevelle. Last Registered in 1996 with 42,000 Original Miles. True 138 ss396, Late Build, 2nd Week of July ‘68, Kansas City Built. Sold New at Van-T Chevrolet in Topeka, Kansas (NCRS Report Included). This Car was Modified into a Serious Street Car in 1973, Today it Presents Identical to how it sat 53 Years ago. Paint, Body, Interior, and Drivetrain are exact from the early 70’s minus the Graphics and Lettering. Retains all of its Original GM Sheetmetal.

Equipment ——

L88 427 4-Bolt Main 289 Casting CE Over-The-Counter 12.5:1 Short Block was purchased from Chevrolet and Installed in the Car in ‘73. Topped with 291 SquarePort Heads, Weiand Tunnel Ram Intake, Dual 660 Center Squirter Holleys, Mallory Tach-Drive Dual-Point Distributor, Accel Wires, Mickey Thompson Polished Valve Covers and Breathers, Doug Thorley 2-Inch Open Headers. 1970 Dated 660 Case M21 Muncie 4-Speed with an M22 Rockcrusher Gear-Set. Lakewood BlowProof Bellhousing, Mr. Gasket Vertical Gate Inline Shifter. Original CF Coded 12-Bolt Rearend with 3.31 PosiTrac Gears. Hurst Air Shocks and NMW Ladder Bars. Trunk Mounted Battery and AC Electric Fuel Pump. 1973 Dated USA Made ET Slotted Mags, 15x10 in the Rear and 15x7.5 in the Front. None of these Components were added to the Car, it was Equipped in this Configuration in the early ‘70’s and it retains all of these Components from that Period. Not a re-made Day-2 Car, reference photos below from 1973, you can see much of the equipment was already on the Car.

Story ———

We are Third Owners of the Car and it was Purchased from the Family of the 2nd Owner of 53 Years. I have pieced together much of the Story and History from Friends/Family that have known the Car and had a hand in the Build back in the Day. It was Put Together as a Street Car in the Early ‘70’s and it was Equipped with all of the Drivetrain Components as seen Today. The Original 396 was hurt and the L88 Short Block was Purchased from a Chevrolet Dealership in Northwest Missouri around 1972/73. It has lived in Northwest Missouri all of its Life. Was Driven/Cruised/Street Raced Early in its Life but has rarely been Driven since the Late 80’s - Early 90’s. It has not been in the Road but a Handful of Times since 1991 and was parked Permanently in 2018 until Present Day. No Mechanicals were Replaced/Updated throughout the Years, the only change was the Removal of the Racing Livery/Writing around the Body and the Car was Re-Painted in Tuxedo Black Enamel in 1991.

Current Maintenance ——

We found the Car in a Large Equipment Shed where it had been Parked since 2018. We have gone through the Mechanicals Extensively to make it a Strong Cruiser/Show Car. Fluids and Filters have been Flushed/Changed, Carburetors have been Rebuilt, Brake System was Updated, New Fuel Tank Installed. New CenterForce Clutch and Pressure Plate were Added. New Pro-Trac Tires all around, N50’s in the Rear and New Front-Runners. Enamel Paint has been Wet-Sanded, Rotary Compound Cut, and Dual Action Finish Polished. Wheels were Removed and Rotary Polished prior to new Tire Installation. Headers were Removed and Re-Finished in 2000 degree Cera-Coat. Entire Interior was Removed and Deep-Cleaned. Seat/Belts/Carpet/Shifter/Door Panels all Removed, Disassembled, Cleaned, and Re-Installed. Four New T3 Headlights Lights Installed. Brakes have been Converted to Disc in the Front (Retained Complete Front-Drum Brake Assembly, Included with Sale).

Overall ———

Everything Works around the Car, all Lights Inside and Out Including all Dash Lights Illuminate Properly. Undercarriage is Extremely Solid, no Pin Holes, no Rot, no Soft Spots (stored indoors all of its Life). Has never been Undercoated or Painted Underneath, has Discoloration of the Floor/Trunk Pan and could Benefit greatly from Dry-Ice, believe the Results would be Excellent. Body is Solid, Straight, Ding/Dent Free. Paint has Great Shine, Deep Reflection, and is very Thick (Measures 10.0 + Mils all around). Runs and Drives well, Shifts Smooth, L88 is very Strong, Starts and Idles Nicely, Steers and Stops very well. Does not get Hot, Does not Leak or Drip, Driveline is Sealed well. Zero Reservations about Driving/Cruising the Car. In my Opinion/Personal Preference, the Car could benefit from a Steeper Gear Ratio. I would suggest a 4.10-4.88 Gear Change to keep the L88 in the Higher RPM Range through the Gears. 3.31’s with a 28.5 Inch Tall Tire and 2.20 First Gear Ratio isn’t ideal for the Feel of this Car in my opinion. The L88 likes to be around 4,500+ RPM plus when running through the Gears, not a low RPM set-up, “Old-School” type Driving Characteristics/Experience. Could also use a set of Vintage Mufflers, sounds Killer but is very Loud/Radical for the Street through the Open Headers.
