These are the second design, probably a bit stronger than the 1st design because the tabs are parallel, vs being welded off the other one. That is the only thing I can come up with on why they changed them. Very cool though!

I'm sure you're right. You really need to load the tabs in double-shear to minimize bending of the tabs.
