Default CE number and Assembly Stamp on Pad

Has anyone seen this on a crate engine? I have a 71 LT1 crate engine I bought from the original owner. It has a CE stamping as well of the assembly stamping with the XCD suffix. Was this standard procedure?

I USED to have a lot of Chevy knowledge stored in my head for things like this but have been away from that and caring about such things for a long time, but here is what I remember from the years that I owned a lot of Corvettes.

The suffix character referred to the h.p. & combinations of other equipment such as T.I. or POSSIBLY trans combinations.

I don't believe that this could be included on a crate/ replacement engine that was not yet installed in a particula vehicle. That should have been stamped on the engine at the time it was factory installed in a vehicle knowing these combinations along with the V.I.N. of the car it was being installed in.

If I am wrong certainly someone more knowledgable on this will correct me.

Crate engines have suffix codes also. From memory, a crate LS7 is XCH and a crate LT-1 is XCD.

Jason,
Are you saying that CE coded full crate motors had suffix codes, but warranty CE short blocks, or whatever did not?

From what I have seen, complete crate engines have suffix codes. I have never seen one like this with a CE code and Suffix.

CE blocks were only made as short-blocks or as "fitted blocks" (just block and pistons). That complete XCD engine assembly may have been built up at Flint using a finished CE short-block intended for an LT-1 replacement as its foundation. Note that the "CE" stamp is on the outboard end of the pad (where they're always found), and the production code stamp is on the inboard end of the pad, in its normal location.

I've only seen one other pad with both the "CE" stamp and the production stamping, and several of us came to that conclusion on that one too.
