working on a 4 wheel drum car - in restoration
What is the correct finish for the inside of the drum brake backing plate (meaning where the brake shoes mount, that backing plate surface ? bare steel, or a light coating of??

I'm joining in. I'm pretty sure the backing plates (and drums) were installed when rear was painted black. For the fronts, I recall mine were dipped black, but I could be mis-remembering.

On the 3rd Gen Novas the rears were bare steel on the inside. Then the axle assembly was sprayed with black rust preventative. This covered the outside only. The fronts were bare inside and out. Hence why the rusted faster than the shields on the disc brake cars. Greg

SEYMOUR Stainless Blast Aerosol to replicate "Bare Steel"
OR Everbrite "PermaClear" over actual shot blasted steel (NOT Glass Beaded) ( I have not tested the PermaClear method for Rust hold out.... but did just coat some of the brake drum natural steel parts with PermaClear) These below parts were glassbeaded and then tumbled in my ceramic media / shaker machine

I have never seen paint on the inside of a drum brake backing plate (or the inside of the drum for that matter) from the factory. Only paint is on the springs.
Replacement drums back in the day almost always had some kind of blue dye on them, and it was machined off when we turned them on the brake lathe.
