Default Big Block exhaust manifold help ....

What are the big Chevy manifolds that have 4 individual tube runners that run parallel down to the flange - passenger side ? I was "visiting" a place yesterday that does some wild stuff, and there was one of these motors that they were putting together for a GM display. I know I've seen or read about 'em before, but can't remember the application, etc.

Nope - not those.

These sweep down and have a common flange, but are 4 individual tubes. Kinda has the look of (4) 0000 in a row with a mounting bolt hole at each end of the "zeros". Does that make any sense ??

Only manifolds like that are either Mystery motor early stuff or a vette header style. Who had it? My guess is Mystery motor. Those manifolds are rare, only set I seen was at Floyds Museum.

Yep, I'll bet that the display motor you saw is a early 427 "mystery motor" of the type Chevy ran at Daytona in '63. The good ol' "How to Hot Rod Big-Block Chevys" book has an explanation, with photos, of this engine. The headers you describe sound just like the ones on the '63 427.

That sounds like it - Mystery Motor. The casting date was something-63. I know that I'd seen a pic or something of them before - - musta been the Hot Rodding Chevy's book that you mentioned.

The motor itself was at a facility that has been commissioned to put together a COMPLETE, and comprehensive engine display history for all GM engines EVER produced. Talk about a MASSIVE undertaking. I saw a Stage 1 Buick motor in pieces, the Mystery Motor going together on a stand, a 396-something waiting for attention, etc. etc. etc. It was simply dazzling to see ........

Case, Smoky Yunick had a couple sets of those manifolds in his Daytona shop when he sold out the building to a friend of mine. I believe one set went with the gold/black 66 Chevelle Nascar outlaw(ed) car. Memory says there were 6 (?) sets produced.

Casey, you ever see the pics of all the Oldsmobile experimental engine stuff? It's awsome! Got a buddy from Battle Creek that calls Olds, "Guinea". He says Oldsmobile was GM's guinea pig. But yaa...... those sound like mystery motor parts. The heads should be smooth on the ends and have cast, bolt in, pushrod guides. Just in case you see some layin' at a swap meet.
