Default 1970 L-34 Open Element Air Cleaner (your opinion)

I'm interested in using the 1970 L-34 Open Element air cleaner on my 1970 L-78 Camaro when the Dual Snorkel(enclosed element) correct air cleaner is not being used....I've been told that because of the unique right rear facing direction(NOT straight out to the right) of the air cleaner to valve cover breather TUBE that the 1970 L-34 Air Cleaner is a one year only on Camaros, Chevelles, and Novas.....Do you agree with my assertion, how difficult to find one of these 14" bases (I could use a repop lid), and what might the going price be?????
Thanks, Chuck/CamarosRus

I am confused----are you saying that the L-78 used a dual snorkel enclosed air cleaner in '70???

Yes......L-78 1970 Camaro came with enclosed element Dual Snorkel air cleaner which I have. I am wanting to also find and own the L-34 open element air cleaner to use on my L-78 engine.......Chuck

On my original 1969 open element air cleaner, the tube for the crankcase vent is not welded in place. It is pretty tight in the air cleaner base, but you can turn it. So one like I have would be fine for a 70 model. On the repros that I have seen the tube cannot be moved, but I think that you could probably free it up and move it.

I am certainly no expert----but I have real---real personal experience with two L78 Camaros---and both had the non-silenced air cleaner. I can look at one in about a few seconds and it has the original---and it ain't snorkeling.

I have moved several of the tubes over the years--just break the spots loose--move till it fits and reweld.

I believe both the (impossible to find) dual snorkle and the open element air cleaners were used on '70 L-78 Camaros as well as non-cowl induction '70 LS-6 Chevelles.
