Default factory tach

i have a ls6, the tach is a 5500 redline not the 6500. i am the second owner, all codes on the tach seem to match, original owner since died, so i can't ask him. question is, is there anybody that has, or heard of having the wrong tach in there car? example of a ls5 tach with the ls6 or vice versa

-----Slim,,,The serial # will have something to do with your tach dilemma. I would think that the build date would have to be in December to even consider it. "Red Alert", arguably the most famous LS6 on the planet, absolutely had a low red-line tach in the dash when delivered to Bob Hamilton, the original owner. It was a very early serial# (delivered to the owner Jan. 5th 1970). Had to have been one of the first dozen or couple of dozen delivered. It would even be more probable if your car was Baltimore produced as thats the assembly plant where Red began life. Im not saying that all early, possibly pilot-line cars would have LS5 tachs but clearly one did. The earliest known LS6 belongs to a member of this sight but I dont know what redline the tach in that car had. Dont know the reasons for these anomolies but they exist!!!.........Bill S

I currently have an LS6 car in the shop that was recently found in western PA with 15K miles that was also built in Baltimore with a scheduled build of Jan. 6 1970 that although the build sheet calls out for the 983 tach, also has a 985 5500 redline unit in the dash. The tach has a build date stamp on the back consistent with the build date of the car. The car had it's share of modifications done to the engine compartment but the interior looked untouched. Another reason why I have learned to never say never.

As has been mentioned, there have been a few original documented solid lifter Chevelles/Elco's found with the wrong hydra lifter tachometer installed at the assembly line.Your's is not the first, nor I'll bet the last to be discovered.
I've heard of a few 5500 redlines hydra's getting the incorrect 6500 solid upgrade too,but I've yet to see those in person.
A 3 & a 5 do look similar to some respect.
A few L-78 1970 Chevelles have also been found with incorrect 5500 redline tachs still in them.
Rodney C's Chevelle,and Chuck Hansons 1970 L-78 Red/Red convert too,who re-installed the proper 6500 during resto.

If back in early 1970 I piced up my new LS6 car and I ordered it back in early Nov/69 and it came with a 5500 red line tack
I would of been more than pissed at the dealer.I would not accept the car. So I can beleive that maybe one or so cars was fitted with the wrong tack, but another thing that lots were
done that way.I have a tendancy to beleive that most of those cars were made up as Hi horse cars along the way. I know a few!
