I know the 17 digit VIN didn't start until 1980 or 81. What year did GM start incorporating the engine designation (not just 6 cyl vs. 8 cyl) in the VIN? Did that start before the 17 digit VIN?

Just off the top of my head I know 1972 Chevelle and ElCamino had the engine designation in the VIN. 1971 and earlier did not.
