The XP-887 was indeed the New Chevy Vega 2300 for 1971.
In it's infancy they were touting it as the next best thing since sliced bread.
I aquired a large collection recently, and have a few a boxes 3 feet high full of Chevrolet zone & dealer letters,as well as 16mm movies about it's unveiling. The marketing & promotional materials planned for it were serious stuff.Chevrolet saw the Handwriting on the wall with High Insurance rates and Gas prices forecast.
I have yet to read everything, but its hype and enthusiasm were fever rate!
Not many Vehicles produced their own Camera.

Seems Don had big plans for it as well. In the 3rd paragraph of this letter Don is explaining how he would like to order 500 of these units for SCCA racing.

That would make sense.
They do reference it's lineage to the Corvair in my materials.
Coming soon..Stinger II & Nickey Vinegarroon Vega.

I once got a ride in an LT-1 Vega conversion. Letdown isn't
the word I'd use ! Scarry - is!!

You are, of course right. As a production vehicle:
