what does this mean? its from the Chevelles item listing..
"A TOTAL OF 323 CHEVELLES WERE PRODUCED WITH THE 427 ENGINE, LESS THAN 93 WERE MADE WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS; OF THAT LESS THAN 45 WERE LEFT AS TRUE COPOs" http://www.mecumauction.com/auctions...D=SC0505-24232

Maybe he meant to say the other 48 were turned into Yenkos?

I believe it was Fran Preve from the Tonawanda plant that came up with the figure of 358 427 engines that were built for the Chevelle application. 10% of that number were built for over the counter sales and warranty replacements. That left the 323 for the assembly line, strictly an estimate.
Assembly # 3964268 = Spec. high perf. L72, M40. 93 built. Assembly # 3964269 = Spec. high perf. L72, Standard 265 built. I understand that 30 COPO Chevelles came into Canada. I don't know if any were Yenkos. Probably not. With the US having 10 times our population, sales figures work out roughly the same. That would make about 330 COPO Chevelles built in total. This is right in line with the 323 estimate.

This is Fred's ole COPO.
![]() I know it was bought much earlier before this auction at 125K. I believe it sold at Rockford for 138K. When this car was shown back in 1995 at Chevelle-Showdown,I considered it the High water mark for COPO Chevelles in Detail & Documentation. I still do. ![]() |
