I visited the Barrett-Jackson store in Scottsdale the other day. They had a '68 SS 396 ragtop in the garage. They said it was not for sale. Sign on it said "1 of 5 - rarer than a LS6". Car was red.
Now I know that there's no way to find out how many were made, despite attempts to the contrary. But anyone know anything about this car? Is it for real? Thanks, Diego |

Would be possible if it were an L78. No record of an L89 being offered in a 68 Chevelle. 4,751 L78s made in 1968.
The story could be believable if it were an L78.

Although not a ragtop,Willard Havens had a 1968 Hard top Chevelle SS L78 with RPO L89 aluminum heads.
I think he sold it to Joe Demesy in Tx. He is a member of our Chevelle club, and it has a December build date. That was the time period when the L89 optioned Camaros/Corvettes were being built too. I don't remember his documents, but I believe it has been found to be authentic. I have heard of L78/L89 1968 Chevelle ragtops, but I have never seen an authentic one. Welcome Ray! If thats the same car it was auctioned off at the BJ auction in Scttsdale this last year. I remember it saying it had a pop for it but never had it displayed. The car sold pretty cheap some where around 40k. The talk was it wasnt a real car. I dont know for sure just relaying what I heard, that would also explain why it went so cheap. If it really sold.

Actually, Willard Haven's Red 68 SS L-89 car was sold to BOB MACY of Post Texas ( about three years ago now ) and it sold for Large coin..for a 68. Not sure if Mr. Macy sold it since that time...it was just featured in the " Muscle car Review" annual magazine...it was a feature that was done while Will had the car in IL. for the NCOA show some years back, Tom Shaw took the pics., the feature never made it to the magazine though until now that is...after Will no longer owns it
It was/is a REAL car though., though it is not a Rag Top car. Mike |

This car is up for sale in Scottsdale in Jan again. I saw an ad for it in the Hemmings muscle mag. It says it has POP.
