Hi guys, was cleaning out my shop and found a torque converter that came out of my old 69 RS-SS Camaro. It appears to be a GM piece and has 6 mounting points. I was looking for a part number stamped on it but have not found one yet(still looking). Is there any way to identify a genuine 6 bolt converter? Anyone know that part number in case I find one? THanks.....Albert

I have a turbo 400 with a "bolt in" rear yoke. It has the six lug converter. I think it came out of a 3/4 ton truck or something like that.

I was talking with an old timer transmission guy about the old converters because this question has come up before. (about the stall speed specs on it)
He said that there should be a one or two letter code on the converter done with a paint stencil. He said if I get him the code or part numbers of an original valve body or other CX trans part numbers he may be able to find more info on the converter. Anyone have an original CX trans that is apart? Mine is in the car running. |

The trans is rare, as I am looking for a "CX" myself. But I remember in older Year One catalog's they had GM valve bodys and pieces for the TH 400 "CX". A guy I talked to down south who used to work on the assembly line at Buick, and now sells transmissions, said the six bolt converter
can be had out of trucks equipped with the TH400 from the factory. I can call him and find out about the part, but any CX TH parts are worth their weight in Gold,I also talked to local tranny people in Chicago, and the difference between a "CD" or a "CX" is the six bolt torque converter, The high shift valve body, and more clutch rings (If that is the right name) inside the trans. that is it. I have been calling trans shops about a GM parts book specifically for high perf. TH400's and still havent found anything. |

Hey Joe, is the code on the six-bolt converter a "CX" or is it a different code?

I don't know what the code should be on the converter. The trans guy told me that if I can find a code then he can tell me more about the converter. I checked mine but don't see any numbers or letters on it. He thinks they were just painted on with a stencil.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay, been busy. Got pictures of the converter. It has spot welds all the way arouhd the side and a two letter code stenciled on the side. The code is BB if I make it out correctly. Now, I am good with cars and OK with a computer but, I don't know how to post pictures. If someone could coach me or do it for me I have 5 or 6 really nice pictures to show everyone. If it is a real one it is very nice. Also it worked when I removed it 9 years ago.Thanks.....Albert

Joel,
Since this converter is "worth its weight in Gold", as you say ,just exactly how much are you willing to pay for it? |

Copo Pete,
I purchased the Hugger SS/RS from Albert. Based on the info he provided and the Camaro itself I do believe that it is a true L-78/TH400 Van Nuys Camaro. The late model ZL1 currently residing in the engine bay will due for now ![]() |
