Default Factory Tach and center gauge

When the factory tach was installed in the 69 Camaros, did they always install the center mounted clock or fuel gauge? I've noticed several cars with a tach and console gauges with no center gauge/clock. Are these correct? The factory assembly manual only shows the wiring for a clock installed with the tach.

When you checked off RPO U16, you got a tach and center dash mounted fuel gauge. With RPO U17 (which means you also had to have RPO D55, center console) you got the tach, fuel-oil-temp-amp gauges mounted on the console and a clock in the center dash spot.

I was looking at the options spread sheet on the CRG website and it shows the tach as RPO U16 and the clock as RPO U35. It makes no mention of the two required together.

It list RPO U17 as Amp, Temp, Oil, Fuel, Clock, Tach.

In the assembly manual under U16 it shows the tach with the clock and shows how to install the clock with ref. to RPO U35.

Does this mean that the clock came with the tach?

If you ordered RPO U16 the tach took the place of the standard large fuel gauge and a smaller fuel gauge was put in the center position (gotta have a fuel gauge). If you look closely at the U16 installation in the assembly manual, you note that the #2 part is decribed as 6431307 GAGE ASM. It also tells you that the dash cut out should be the same as for U35 (installer refer to U35 for dimensions). The only way to get the clock with a tach (factory) was to order U17. Of course, if you did not want gauges, the clock could be order singularly RPO U35.

Z28DZ, I agree.
Looks like there's a glitch in the CRG options spread sheet. It should note this.

This means that cars with a tach and not somekind of center gauge is "incorrect".

I'm not so sure it is a glitch in the info (although the fuel gauge position change might be worth a note) as much as it is the ordering of a specific option. When you ordered U16 tach only, part of the U16 package was the center fuel gauge. You could not order U17 without D55, so ordering some options triggered the need for other options or a rearrangement/change in placement of other items (cause & effect). Realize, also, that you could not order U16 & U35 together. However, there was a dealer order clock that could be mounted on the trans tunnel and would probably work with D55 (non gauged).

As far as the no center instrument for U16, I'm sure GM (or someone installing it after the fact) would not release a car without a fuel gauge. As far as U17, in the "who knows, anything could be possible", a buyer might have been able to request clock delete from the U17 option. But, on the whole, some type of center instrument should be included with either of these options.
