This post was inspired by a thread in the Classified section on a very rare R-code 427 1966 Galaxie 500 7-Litre. If you didn't know, the 7-Litre was a one-year only model which introduced the 428, C6, 9-3/8" rear end and Kelsey Hayes disc brakes for the first time on full-size Ford models. Of the 11,073 built in `66, 38 were 427s including 36 2-door hardtops and 2 convertibles.
1966 was the first full production of the solid lifter Medium Riser 427 which in part was developed from the GT40 Le Mans program. It featured updated intake ports & runners and larger valves for improved overall induction. From 1963.5 when the 427 was born from the 406 through 1965 when it cleaned up NASCAR, the production-car 427s were all Low Risers. Only exception is the 50 Lightweight Galaxies built in 1964 for racing. The Medium Riser 427 was available through 1967 before being discontinued. For 1968 full-size Fords could no longer get a 427. Ford did offer a hydraulic version (W-code) for the `68 GTE Cougar only though April 1969 before the 428 CJ was offered in its place. It did not have Medium Riser heads but instead that similar to the C8OE-N CJ heads. Pictured is a 1965 Galaxie 500 XL 427 road test with 0-60 elapsed time of 4.8 seconds and a 1966 7-Litre press photo. Last edited by 66SevenLitre; 04-19-2026 at 08:26 AM. |

My first car was a hand-me-down from sister, brother to me. A wimbleton white w/redgut 66 2dr fastback galaxie 500, 289, c4. That was a great car and believe best styling for that generation.
