Default Chicago 1967 Blizzard

50 years ago today, the Chicago blizzard of 1967 struck northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana on January 26-27,1967 with a record-setting 23 inches snow fall in Chicago and its suburbs before the storm abated the next morning. Two days earlier, the temperature had hit a record 65 degrees. The forecast for the day called only or a modest amount of snow. But starting in the early morning hours on Jan. 26, the blizzard began dumping snow at a rate of 2 inches per hour.Winds gusted to 53 mph,as snow drifted 6 feet in some areas. When it was all over, there were 23 inches of snow on the ground.
Thousands of people spent the night in hotels, hospitals and fire stations. There were thousands of cars, trucks and CTA buses abandoned and left in the snowbound streets and on the expressways.
More snow fell over the next 10 days, grinding cars, buses and air traffic to a halt.
As of Jan.2017,it was the single greatest snowfall in one storm in Chicago history.

I remember it too....the only time in my K-12 education that we were dismissed from school early, and then the school buses did not run for the next 2 or 3 days. Took that long for the county snow plows to clear the roads as we lived 'out in the country'.

I lived on the north side of Chicago near Niles and Park Ridge. We were let out of school early on Friday, I believe. By Monday, we had to go back to class.
