Today in my club a member shared something I have never seen before.
A letter from GM Chevrolet that tells the new owner how is car was ordered. This LS6 1970 Chevelle was ordered out of Buffalo NY so it is not a Canadian ordered car. This document is proof that Chevrolet COPO does still have records on hand somewhere for USA built cars, all though this was done in 1982 was it possible they destroyed the records after 1982 or are they hiding them away from us? See photo, I modified some characters on this document so copy cats can't copy the real deal.

Interesting letter Danny. IMO, It does not provide any new info as it sounds like the owner provided his VIN and/or TT data which would indicate the Atlanta plant and the owner most likely provided the "CRV" code from his block stamp for deciphering.

My brother Gary got a letter like that in the early 80's when he asked for information about his 1967 RS/SS 396 Camaro. They even stated how many they made in the letter. He still has it..as he saves EVERYTHING

Not trying to kill the joy but I do not see anything there that is specific to the vehicle.
The holy grail would be along the lines of "according to our records" your vehicle was built on...... equipped originally from the factory with a.......engine and a ......model transmission.. etc. The letter posted Looks similar to the correspondence that Chevrolet put out during that period, with the exception being if the memo came from a VIP like Piggins with specific data from personal files pertaining to a direct knowledge program. |

in the 80s i got a similar letter from Buick for a 66 GS convert 4 speed i had..was very generic but did have production numbers of cars like mine..it had a/c...with a stick and a/c there where less than 200 produced..i cant remember the actual number but they had a specific number like 176 or something close..but other than that there was no real info supplied.
i thought it was cool they actually answered a letter...

If you sent a letter and asked what does this this and this mean they will define the codes for you, however defining a code which could be restamped, modified, etc bears no direct relationship to how it was originally equipped when it left the assembly plant.

Bruce, a friend of mine received a similar letter in the early 80s about his butternut yellow 67 SS/RS L-78 Camaro. It listed the production number of 1138 L-78 cars built. I do not know what was put into his letter to Chevrolet, but Chevrolet came back with the 1138 cars built information. Shortly after, Super Chevy Magazine had an article that also stated the 1138 cars built information. It appears at least part of the information was out there at one time.

Copies of Invoices and build records are available for many GM cars from the mid-late 1970's onwards:
