Default 1970 Goat Question

Good morning all. I just purchased a 1970 GTO and am having trouble finding any information on the last digit in my VIN. It is 242370B1xxxxxB. I can decode the entire thing except for the "B" at the end. Anyone have any ideas?

Doesn't sound right. I've been building GM cars in assembly plants for 34 years and have never seen that before, not on a modern vehicle or a vintage (collector) car.

The last six digits should be numbers and will correspond to the build sequence.

Sounds like the "B" is some kind of part code and just happened to be in the vicinity of the VIN making it look like suffix. It may have mistakenly been added to the title and the error has just been carried on.

Where are you seeing it? On the title? body VIN? frame, or engine? Do those all match? Can you post a pic? (with the other digits blocked out, of course).

You might also try posting on PerformanceYears.com and see if this is some kind of anomoly specific to Baltimore built GTOs; my historical expertise is more focused on '63-'65 Pontiac Michigan built cars so I'm willing to stand corrected if someone else has more specifics on this.

Keith, appreciate the insight. I've paid for the car, and am heading to NC next week to trailer her home. So, I can't snap a pic just yet. However, I thoroughly (personally) checked her out on Saturday and the "B" appears at the end of the VIN both on the data plate under the hood, as well as the VIN plate embedded in driver's side dash. I can't find any reference whatsoever to the "B" on any of the decoding sites. The front grill has both GTO and 455 emblems embedded.

Very good. I'll look forward to pics, and do encourage you to make a post at PY (I can show you how if required).

I'm thinking this is something Baltimore did, and that it's just a redundant "B" at the end that doesn't really mean anything (but some of those guys would know better than I).

Have a safe trip -

Your VIN should have 13 characters and no letter at the end.

Steven, that's the point! Hence the confusion! 13 characters, and a "B" at the end.

Sounds interesting, is the build early and can you post the trim tag info?
Are you sure the B you're seeing on the trim tag isn't the B of the BDY imprint?
Hopefully all's original and not a state assigned Vin or otherwise also that if something unique PHS info has the answers!
