Default Part # decipher

Bought a flywheel from the local Chevrolet dealer, and a clutch kit from the NNN swap meet several years ago. Went to put them in the trunk to get them balanced, and decided to check alignment - or not, The pressure plate mounting holes are nowhere near where they should be, perhaps someone can tell me what these part numbers are:

Flywheel: box # C3991469, cast # on the flywheel itself 3973456

Clutch Kit: box #'s ACD#381146 & GM#88989167

I bought both with the understanding that they were for a 10.5" combination.

I remember the #3991469 superseded the #3973456 sometime late '69? and is a very common 14" diameter manual transmission flywheel that accepts an 11" diameter heavy-duty clutch, used on internally balanced BB & SB 1955-85 GM w/2pc.crank seal.

Crank Flange bolt pattern,3.58"
Clutch dia.10.4" 11"
Starter ring gear teeth,168

#381146 (88989167) is a 1966-1968 Chevrolet Chevy II base engine clutch.
10.4 in. x 10T x 1-1/8 in. raised diaphragm

So, I have the right flywheel but the wrong clutch kit? Is that flywheel used for both 10.5 and 11" clutch kits?

This tick's me off. Looks like the pressure plate was switched out from the box.

I rechecked the flywheel # and it's for either a 10.5" or 11.0", so I'm good there. The pressure plate does not line up, so I really don't care what it's for anymore - I need another clutch kit.

Can I put an 11" clutch/pressure plate into a 403 bellhousing, along with the dust cover? I don't really care too much, as I was going with a 10.5" setup initially but if I can stuff an 11" version into the same bell - I'll do it.

I'm almost positive you can not Marlin. I think you will have to go with the small one for the 403 or find a 621 for the larger stuff.

Anyone have a particular brand that they like/dislike for clutch kits? I'm leaning towards a stock GM/Delco unit unless someone has a better experience with another brand. This car won't have a sticky tire on it, so I don't need some crazy holding power.....

Marlin

We just use the Hays on the LT-1 COPO. Worked great over the years.

Ok, sounds good. I'm thinking of a whole new idea on this one, I was going Day 1 initially, but now we are going to Day 2 this car so......
