PLEASANT PLAINS —September 24, 2010. A Pleasant Plains High School graduate killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan will be buried with military honors on Tuesday.
Staff Sgt. Josh Powell, 25, was among nine service members who died Tuesday during combat operations in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the U.S. Army’s 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. Four other soldiers in the 101st also were killed, along with four Navy sailors, according to the Department of Defense. Visitation for Powell will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday September 27th at First United Methodist Church West, 2924 S. Koke Mill Road. Funeral services will follow at the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Bisch & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Powell’s body arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday and is due to arrive in Springfield this Saturday, an Army representative working with the family said Thursday. Plans are in the works for an escort for Powell’s body once it arrives in Springfield. Powell is survived by his parents, Susan Needham and David Powell; brothers Travis Powell, 29, and Zachary Powell, 5; stepfather Doug Needham and stepmother Theresa Powell. He grew up in the Pleasant Plains area and attended Plains schools, graduating from Pleasant Plains High School in 2003. Powell was serving his third deployment when he was killed. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gold Star Mothers or the Wounded Warriors Fund. Staff Sgt. Josh Powell is the third soldier with local ties to die in Afghanistan in less than three months. This crash made recent headlines and to date is still under investigation as to the cause of the crash which they do not feel was due to enemy fire. Last night we (the Pleasant Plains Fire Department) were asked by his family to escort his body from the Springfield airport to the funeral home and then again for the funeral procession which will be quite an honor. It has been a pretty hard couple of weeks here in Plains due to a recent nearby home burglary and murder of a well known and local family's wife, a 16 year old killed in a car crash and now this. We only have 777 people in town so it hits home to a lot of people here. |

Rick, My condolences to the family and the entire Pleasnt Plains/Springfield community.
As you may know I am an IN COUNTRY Viet-Nam veteran. I had it pretty easy over there, working as a Helicopter mechanic. I got drafted. I'm patriotic and proud of my service My father (WW2/Battle of the Bulge) is buried at Tahoma Natl Cemetary in rural Seattle. Out of respect for everyone, I have deleted my comments about this sad period of our American history.
