I finally got my Chevelle motor squared away and she is back in the car and running good!! I used Brad Penn "green" break in oil to break in the cam and ran the motor for about an hour with same in it and then changed it. I then put in conventional Castrol 20W50 motor oil and have driven the car approximately 200 miles.
My question is, I would like to change the oil again now and use the Lucas Oil additive (1 quart) with the Castrol conventional 20W50 oil in the motor. Will this hurt the motor?? Should I allow the rings to seat and break in more before adding this?? I went to the Lucas website and they claim you can use the stuff on a new motor. Has anyone had any issues or problems with this stuff?? All I have heard is good things about this additive.. Thanks... Rich

Lucas makes good products, but I don't know if it contains zinc (ZDDP). If your engine has a flat tappet cam, then I would use Rotella-T or Delo 400 15W-40 diesel oil. These are inexpensive and have 1200 ppm zinc which is required for flat tappet cams.

Rich, I have been using Lucas with every oil change since I broke in my L35 in 04. I have had no problems and use 1 quart for insurance against dry start ups. I don't think you have anything to worry about. I broke it in with a 20w50 but now run 10w40 Penzoil. After sitting for 4+ months in the winter, my engine starts on the first try and hear the tappets for only a few seconds with 60 psi oil pressure.

Rich, Continue using the Brad Penn. Why did you stop? Also I use the Lucas additive and I have NO noises and NO problems. I am not a big additive guy but the Lucas products seem to be on target for many things. I use 15W/40 Brad Penn from a guy in North Carolina that I buy it from. He mixes it for me. I use it in my 69 Z and my hudraulic lifter 69 SS nova.

Diesel or race oils are not the answer for old flat- tappet motors.
Diesel Oil Racing Oil I distribute ZDDPlus and use it exclusively in all of my flat-tappet motors. If you are in need, I offer a SYC member discount that will get the product to you at a savings. I can be contacted via P.M. or e-mail at [email protected] .

Here we again about the oil and Rotella in general. Now, Rotella was all right to use for awhile in the older, flat tappet engines, but it too, now has the reduced zinc levels in it. It's time to shy away from it. That Brad-Penn oil, although I've never personally used it, is supposed to be excellent and I've heard nothing but good things about it. The dino-based Valvoline Racing oil 20W-50 has the zinc content in it also. My current, personal favorite is the synthetic Mobil 1 15W-50 sold at every Wal-Mart at $22.00 for a 5-quart container. Check out Mobil 1's web site and you'll see it's formulated with the zinc, etc. for older engines. Now there's a couple different Mobil 15W-50's, so make sure you get the correct one. It's priced great! I'm sure everybody already knows the procedure for seating rings with standard oil at break-in and then switching to synthetic. As far as additives, I like one of the zinc/break-in additives at first but nothing after that. Most petroleum engineers cringe at the thought of adding things to their finely developed products.

IS the ZDDP good to use with all older engines. I run %50 leaded 110 in my cars but would like to know if this stuff is worth it. do only flat tappet cars see the benefit?
it will be going in original- Pontiac RA III and IV 400s 70 LT 1 70 hemi thanks John |

Maybe sometime I will switch to the Brad Penn synthetic oil.... After the rings seat I want to at least try the Lucas additive with the Castrol 20W50 and see how that works... Thanks guys for the replies.... PS the cam is hydraulic ![]() Rich
