Default American made hardware...found it!

I keep a pretty good assortment of nuts, bolts, and washers stocked in my bolt drawers. I have been buying from the local nut and bolt shop, General Bolt and Screw for close to 40 years.. I went there a couple of weeks ago to restock. I usually spend 2-3 hundred bucks when there. I asked for American made only. They had NOTHING made here. I then went to or called all of the bolt places around here. No one has American made stuff anymore. Very frustrating. I found a place in Ohio, Kimball Midwest, that has 85% of their merchandise made in the USA. I got my shipment today. All very nice stuff. They have a website, www.kimballmtdwest.com. You can't buy direct, but they will hook you up with a rep. American made is important to me.

Tony, I commend you! We all should read labels and inquire about the stuff we buy. You can have ALL the stimulus packages you want but if we Americans don't do our part it will all be in vain. Another reason why I can't understand anybody restoring a car using Chinese sheetmetal and so forth.

There are 3 manufacturers of SAE graded cap screws in the states and 1 in Canada. There headmarks are as follows.

Infasco (Canada) - a solid triangle, some cap screws will have a outlined triangle and those products are asian imports

Nucor (US) - a lower case "n"

Lake Erie Screw - "LE" in caps, they also private label for Caterpillar, Lawson, Tifco, Bowman, Porteous, etc.

Highland Thread a Division on MNP - headmark is an outlined "H" that looks like a dumbell.

There are some other cap screws which are made in the USA which are stronger than Grade 8. Those include L-9, Foremost Threaded Products and others.

Avoid RBW marked cap screws...this use to be an American made product many years ago but since the late 70's has been entirely imported from overseas.

Don't forget to ask for Domestic made nuts and flat washers. These are even harder to find.

Good info howard. The bolts from KM are the "Nucor" brand. The nuts and washers come in a bag of 100. They say only "product of USA, so I don't know the manufacture of them.

They are based here in Columbus, and I'm friends with one of their reps. Let me know if I can help.
