Lift stop cable unit
I recently picked up an nos lift stop cable unit (#325875), that I'd like to put on my 69 l-78 El Camino. Does anyone know the story behind this unit. Was it a recall that certain cars got for torque problems/broken motor mounts etc. Were they used on all big blocks and/or small blocks, solid lifter cars etc.
Also: Does anyone have any paper work on this subject, like something from GM or a dealer recall letter, etc. Any info would be great. Thanks Bill |

Re: Lift stop cable unit
yes, Camaros, Novas, big Chevies, pickups and vans all got them
Chevelles never did ... I think there have been posted letters that were mailed on this subject All were model specific the holy grail is the one for the V8 Nova, 65-67 not solid lifter specific, but big block / small block specific plus model specific

I may still have the recall letter from Chevrolet or my dealer, don't remember who I got it from. I thought it was only for cars that had mechanical throttle linkage, and those with cables were not affected?. So a 1968-up Chevelle or El Camino wouldn't have this since they used a throttle cable.

Re: Lift stop cable unit
It is my understanding that these were a recall item and were installed on Chevelles also. Why would it be a motor mount problem on every other car and not a chevelle?

What I remember is that everything got that under the recall. There was a huge deal made of it in the media at the time too.

The cable carb linkage wasn't as likely to lock the throttle wide open as the solid linkage was.

Re: Lift stop cable unit
The reason is simple.66-67 chevelles used the metal accelerator rod which would get stuck under the air cleaner during acceleration when you had a broken motor mount.68 and up chevelles used a cable which stopped the problem

Re: Lift stop cable unit
none of the kits are for "Chevelles" per se, none of the instruction sheets include Chevelles and none of the boxes mention Chevelles
Nova kits, 3 different ones, 1 V8 for 65-67, other 2 are included with the Camaro kits Camaro / Nova kits 2 different, small block & big block, none for 6 cyl big car, small block without ps big car, " with ps big car, big block trucks. 2 kits, w & w/out PS vans I have never seen a kit that include the Chevelle models and I have had tons of these things (still do ...) I am sure the reason was the throttle CABLE, vs the ROD as stated above. Again, I have never seen an instruction sheet mention a Chevelle nor have I ever seen a kit for the Chevelle.

Re: Lift stop cable unit
The recall was due to the fact that the driver's side motor mount could break under certain "abusive" conditions, causing the engine to lift on the driver's side, thereby causing the mechanical throttle to be pulled to full WOT condition without the ability to release itself, since it was now at full throttle, causing more of a high-horsepower, torque-over condition, pinning the carb at WOT till the engine blew up, the car crashed, or the driver was intelligent enough to turn the ignition key off, diffusing the impending explosion.
A redesign of the motor mount with interlocking internal plates inside the molded rubber, eventually rendered the recall kit obsolete. |

</div></div> When did the redesign of the motor mount take place? That alone would answer a lot of questions. I know the instructions I had to the recall kit I just sold was dated 1971. Kurt |
