What is the differance (usage) between the caps with the black painted recesses and those with the frosted gray recesses? Thanks.

Not sure... Most originals I've ever seen have the accents painted black. Are you sure the "frosted gray" accents you're referring to aren't just unpainted/bare? I've heard some claim a few were sold like that...not sure if it's true or not, as the black paint can be rubbed off with relative ease while cleaning if any abrasives (steel wool, brillo pad, etc.) are used.

There are ones with grey inserts instead of black. i think they are the earlier versons of these caps. Maybe all the 68's were grey and 69 and later black. Thats what Im thinking. I have examples of both in my garage right now and the grey is definately factory.
