Default D plate question

im sure it varies from state to state but i over heard a guy saying that if you have a D plate on a crew cab dually, the second you hook a trailer up to it youre illegal due to the wheel base of the truck unless you have a CDL. any truth to this . i guess im way over length with a 53' trailer .
