Default 1970 open element air cleaner L78

Should the vent tube on an original open element air cleanner for a 1970 l78 in a Nova end at the edge of the base or protrude between 1 or 1 1/2 inch past the edge of the base.I have seen both in pictures on supposedly restored and original l78 Nova with the open element air cleaner.Does any one which one is correct.I have alead on one for my restoration and the tube ends at the edge of the base and the tube is pointed correctly between the valvecover and the vacuum canister for the distributor which is correct for a low riser aluminum intake manifold. Thanks for any help.Bob
