I am preparing for a full (show quality) repaint on my '02 Camaro SS. I'm planning to transform the car into a ZL1 Phase II clone. This is not for the purpose of resale - it is solely for my own enjoyment. I met with the painter today, and I need some specifics regarding ZL1 paint. I need some very detailed pictures and measurements of the stripes - hood, roof, and rear deck/spoiler. Can anyone help me with this info? I understand this will take some time, so I'm willing to compensate for your time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may want to ask your questions on a differant forum. Clones, no matter how well intended, are often frowned upon by legitimate owners.

While I do agree with Craig, I think with a newer car, like the one in question, one that will not see value increase for a long while, is quite different.

Craig - Thanks for the friendly advice, but I believe this is a matter of intent and opinion. Allow me to clarify for better understanding. As a long time classic car restorer and collector, I condemn cloning with the intent to deceive or misrepresent. However, I do not believe there is anything wrong with changing the appearance of a car to suit your personal taste. Isn't that what hot rodding is all about? After all - isn't that what a select group of dealers did to create the Supercars we all know and love? I'm not trying to duplicate or forge documentation - I simply want the ZL1 stripe that runs down the center of the car. Anyone who thinks this is wrong needs a serious reality check. Without customization and personalization, these cars and the hobby as we know it would not exist.
Dan - I will try GMMG, but historically they have been quite protective of anything relating to these cars. Thanks! |

Thanks for the "food for thought", but there are many things you are not taking into consideration. This issue may have significance for classics, but it has no relevance to late model vehicles.
First, consider the authentication process of a classic vs. late model. Obtaining original documents on a 30+ year old vehicle can be difficult, and in some cases impossible. Verifying the authenticity of a 2002 ZL1 is quite simple. GMMG and/or the selling dealer can verify the VIN. Let's also consider the availability of parts. There are several items on the 2002 ZL1 that are not commercially available. The distinctions continue with how I intend to apply the stripes. As mentioned in my first post, I am having the stripes painted. The stripes on all 2002 ZL1's are vinyl. All of those cars had the B4C package; my car does not. They were all equipped with a 6-speed manual trans, and mine is automatic. The list literally goes on, and on. Another factor to consider is motivation. People clone and misrepresent vehicles for financial gain. The cost to accurately and completely clone a 2002 ZL1 would far exceed market value. Just some food for thought. |

I was just reading this thread and thought I would chime in... As a few of you know that own one of these vehicles in question and others that have seen these cars in real life, Matt Murphy covered his ass with the documentation of these cars. All GMMG cars have a TAG in the door and most if not all have a number on the rear view mirror.. Plus the tag on the dash over the radio that reads which car it is and its number plus horse power.. Matt also has a list of the cars that he did and what were done to each of them at his place before they were shipped to the dealers or new owners of the cars. As for you making a clone of this car would be great, I dont see anything wrong with that. Its not like these cars are for sale everyday, and a lot of us dont have enough money to purchase one to begin with. I say build whatever makes you happy, but if you ever go to resale hopefully the new owner would get a car fax on it to see where it came from and where its been... Mark

I was only trying to explain the reasonings behind the "anti-clone" philosophy. I personally have no problem with what you are doing. Just letting you know why there is so much sentiment in the opposited direction. As far as new vs. old, I can assure you that many a 69 Camaro got Z/28 badges and stripes when they were just a few years old. Like I said, it is your car and you have the right to do whatever you want with it. I don't think anyone on this board believes you intend to some day pass it off as something it is not. Lynn |

Hopefully this car will never be in the hands of another until after I've moved on from this life. I began my search for a 2002 SS in February of 2002. I wanted a hardtop (no t-tops) with the 345hp package. I couldn't find what I wanted, so I settled for a '02 Z28. The search never really stopped, and in October of 2002 I found this car. The car is rarely driven; it's never seen rain. The only negative aspect of this repaint is what caused the need for it. I recently picked up a pair of '67 GTO 400 HO 4-speed projects which are occupying the garage. I moved the Camaro out, and it was immediatley vadalized. Every body panel was heavily scratched. I'm in the process of a complete disassembly to ensure the repaint is done correctly. All of the body panels, glass, interior, and drivetrain are being removed. I hope someone can help with specs on the stripes. I am investing a lot in this repaint, and I really want it done right. Thanks! |
